Fillers Q & A

What are fillers?

Fillers, also called dermal fillers, are gel-like cosmetic injections that add volume under your skin. Many of the visible signs of aging are due to your skin’s volume loss. This includes a decrease in collagen and subcutaneous fat.

Collagen is a structural protein responsible for your skin’s youthful strength and elasticity. Loss of collagen makes your skin thin and dry and more susceptible to lines and wrinkles.

The layer of subcutaneous fat keeps your skin full and plump. Declining fat stores causes your skin to loosen and sag.

Fillers serve as a replacement for these age-related changes, rejuvenating your appearance.

What can fillers do?

Fillers are best known for smoothing out lines and wrinkles. Limmer Dermatology carries the Restylane® line of fillers and Juvéderm®. They use each type of filler to address different concerns.

Restylane

Limmer Dermatology uses the Restylane family of fillers to correct moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds around the mouth, including laugh lines (nasolabial folds) and marionette lines. They also use Restylane for lip enhancement.

Juvéderm

Limmer Dermatology uses Juvéderm to smooth away wrinkles around the mouth and nose, including smile lines and vertical lip lines.

The fillers available at Limmer Dermatology contain lidocaine to minimize discomfort during injections.

What can I expect when getting fillers?

Limmer Dermatology customizes your filler treatment plan to match your goals and reviews the details of your injections, so you know what to expect.

While you sit in the treatment chair, your dermatologist cleans your skin with an antiseptic agent. They may also apply a numbing cream to further decrease discomfort.

Then, they carefully inject small amounts of filler into the desired area and massage it into place. They continue injecting and massaging until they get the look you want.

Fillers provide immediate results.

How long do fillers last?

Fillers are temporary and may last anywhere from six months to a year. Limmer Dermatology gives you instructions on how to care for your skin following your filler injections to prolong your results.

Our dermatology practice also offers Botox® injections, which they may recommend combining with your fillers to get the look you want.
